Leading the Lean Healthcare Journey: Driving Culture Change to Increase Value – December 2010
Joan Wellman – Joan Wellman & Associates, Inc.
Pat Hagan and Howard Jeffries – Seattle Children's Hospital
Blending case studies with practical theory, this book uniquely describes how the healthcare value proposition can be changed by reducing waste, variation, and complexity in healthcare. It reveals the leadership tenacity and culture change required to remove waste from healthcare processes and eliminate the root cause of soaring costs, poor quality and safety, and limited access. It provides practical, applicable advice alongside personal and organizational stories and case studies told by physician and administrative leaders, all students of the Toyota Production System.

Seattle Children’s and JWA Continue to Collaborate
After many years of partnering as consultants/clients, JWA and Seattle Children’s began to collaborate in 2008 by coupling a two day Seattle Children’s Continuous Performance improvement Showcase with a five day JWA Lean Leader Training. We recommend first attending the Seattle Children’s CPI Showcase to see the application of Toyota principles to a healthcare enterprise and then attend JWA Lean Leader Training to gain more in-depth knowledge of Toyota principles that form the foundation for Seattle Children’s lean transformation. For information on how to register for these events, go to the SEMINAR SERIES or www.seattlechildrens.org/cpiconsulting.
